On un-usability

The planning report for the future of the Klybeck states clearly: the laboratory building is a flaw. An urbanistic flaw opposing the new master plan guidelines, a structural flaw of high inflexibility. And sure not worth protecting, as it does not contribute to the area’s sense of identity. It has to go. I keep it. I keep it to pose a question: don‘t these complex structures convey an even bigger potential for reuse? A residential use is required. The necessary changes to accomplish this have to be minimal - not only to be profitable at all. To commit to the structure means to allow the form of living to be shaped through it. In building up on a clear stance towards reuse and reprogramming, this design is understood as an investigation. An investigation facilitating the given, highly determining structure to finding freedoms for living. To offer the resident a place that is more than just a bathroom, bedroom and kitchen.
