Topic C, Bau 125, Suter + Suter, 1962-67, Unterer Rheinweg 180
Following the sale of the former CIBA site, the city of Basel is embarking on the redevelopment of the northern district. The area, which is currently still closed off, will become accessible to everyone. In developing the grounds, it is now essential to establish connections with the surrounding neighborhoods. Building 125, located at the edge of the site, was erected between 1962 and 1967 by Suter+Suter Architects and served as a laboratory and office building where animal testing was conducted.
The existing qualities of the old industrial location should be preserved. The large, landscaped open spaces that wrap around the substantial building volumes are identity-defining. Its position directly on the Rhine, on the opposite bank, underscores the privileged setting. The existing building is characterized by a double-height ground floor with a grand entrance hall that underscores the importance of the structure.
The former industrial site will be transformed into a district for living and working. My goal is to create high-quality living space for residents. In line with the neighborhood, the high-rise will also integrate residential and work areas. Specific additions and subtractions to the existing massing respond to the new uses. Expanding the building at the lower floors establishes, on the one hand, a connection to the lower Rhine promenade; on the other, it creates flexible, contiguous spaces for various types of office use. In the upper floors, a targeted cut into the existing structure creates more facade area. This results in dual-aspect apartments with expansive views over the city. The building will become part of a new skyline for Basel, serving as a symbol of the district’s transformation.
