The Hardbrücke, a former temporary solution, is being rethought as a future-proof infrastructure. During the research phase, four challenges were defined.1. The Escher-Wyss quarter shows a high degree of gentrification.
2. The Canton of Zurich is planning a higher densification in this area in the new Master plan (Richtplan). This leads to a higher need of close leisure spaces for the habitants. According to the new master plan, the roofs must also be greened and accessible to the public.
3. The western bypass was built to reduce inner-city traffic, but the concept was not implemented. The city of Zurich continues to build noise protection measures, exposing residents to high levels of emissions.
4. The Federal Supreme Court intends to disclose culverted lines. Newspaper articles also state that not enough PV systems can be built today to meet the energy demand.
The “Rooftop Distributor” refers to these four problems. The infrastructure provides a social meeting point for the Escher-Wyss district and provides access to the green roofs, creating new local recreation areas for the growing number of residents. Traffic is consequently reduced, and many households can be supplied with energy thanks to the installed PV system. It is a multifunctional infrastructure that combines the topics of diversity, sustainability, and traffic in one and responds to future issues.
