The School Path

The total number of children attending a regular class of the elementary school or a municipal kindergarten in Zürich city is expected to continue to grow strongly in the coming years; by the school year 2027/28, a growth of about 6100 students (+18%) is expected. In the Triemli-Albisrieden district, a neighbourhood known as an ideal area for families to reside, the recent construction activity is a key factor for the demographic increase.

The city of Zürich has already planned to expand or build new school buildings to cope with this lack of space. As the lack of space in schools is met by new buildings, how can we adapt the school system to offer a new way of learning? How can we offer our children a school of life that is in line with our ever-changing society?

Can we mend the gap between school standards and the family environment, personal history, social, communal, and daily lives?

This analysis of the Triemli-Albisrieden district resulted in a proposal to connect different schools by a path that open them up to the area.

All along the path, new infrastructures take place by offering different activities for the school and the neighbourhood, hosting actors in the area and using the specific environmental qualities of the surroundings.

This project is a proposition to reuse the existing temporary school extensions, the « Züri Modular » - Pavilions, in a new form.
