Connecting the City

In Thurgauerstrasse one can see a lack of density and active life. Indeed, the ground floor level is very introverted, chaotic and unattractive. At the time when this part of the city was designed, priority was given to cars. This is the main reason why people feel disconnected and lost, which is even reinforced by the fact that a lot of buildings are actually almost empty and raised by about one meter from the ground.

Therefore, a new path for pedestrians and bicycles is introduced on a different level to better connect the neighbourhoods and reactivate the abandoned buildings. This path goes along the entire street and tries to collect as many pedestrians as possible. It also leads through several private or semi-private courtyards, at the moment hidden, which through the new intervention could receive re-enactment.

A repetitive structural element painted red refering to the industrial site with its production bridges and high-voltage lines is introduced to give identity to this loose part of the city and can be seen as a further addition to the alphabet of bridges of Zurich in a similar language like Bucheggplatz or Hardbrücke.

Furthermore this red steel element enriches the outside landscape providing benches, kiosks, galleries. The path interacts with someexisting buildings creating new public spaces, opportunities for regeneration, enlarging and activating Thurgauerstrasse environment.
