Piece by piece - Siedlung Höli

Densification should be designed in collaboration with those who will later live in it. Inspired by the participatory planning process of the settlement 50 years ago – using a wooden model at a scale of 1:50 and a set of design rules – a new system was developed that enables the residents to actively participate in the planning of den- sification and to shape it according to their individual needs. De- pending on the existing roof structure, two types of extensions were developed: one single-story and one one-and-a-half-story, which vertically extend the previous modular structure of the settlement. Over time, this can give rise to a diverse and vibrant roofscape, while single-family homes gradually transform into multi-family houses.

The existing sand-lime brick structure (250 x 120 x 135 mm) is complemented by a timber frame construction (2500 x 1250 mm), filled in with natural clay bricks at the staircases. No ground is new- ly sealed; instead, architectural elements incorporate niches that provide habitats for animals, creating new ecological spaces along- side human habitation.
