The reuse of masonry has a long history and is still widespread in many parts of Europe today. How can this way of creating and preserving value be re-established in Zurich? Based on this question, I have designed a company that deals with the local conditions – such as high labour costs, inner-city construction site logistics, the local demolition industry, standardization and certification – and operates profitably.

On the Hardfeld site in District 4, the city plans to create a «City Logistic Hub» for innovative companies in the field of «circular economy» from 2030. The company Spross, which already operates a recycling plant for demolition material on the site, has ideal conditions there to establish a new business area in the field of «urban mining».

The significant leverage of industrial companies in the construction industry, the available product ranges and certified construction methods can be used to drive forward our common efforts towards a sustainable economy. The recovery of bricks can contribute to this, along with many other measures. However, this is not just about preserving usable material. It also offers an opportunity to create something authentic, specific and local.
