The Herdern area is located at the junction of four Zurich districts: Altstetten, Aussersihl, Industriequartier and Hönggerberg. These parts of the city are connected by three bridges, which are designed for cars and provide a rather unpleasant experience for the pedestrians.

The Bridge offers an alternative way of moving across the city. It stretches from Altstetten to Hönggerberg, while connecting the many islands that form the site.

It is also a reaction to the planned disappearance of the Stadion Brache due to the project for the new Hardturm Stadium. This represents a big loss for the neighborhood of the Industriequartier as very little room is left for initiative or community. The Bridge is therefore thought as a promenade and a place for enjoyable time on which both planned and spontaneous activities can take place.
