The Hesitant City

A small village transformed by the addition of a motorway, Switzerland’s first shopping mall, the largest Rangierbahnhof in the region, one of the biggest Wohnsiedlung in Switzerland, the first IKEA outside of Scandinavia. American suburbia meets Swiss suburbia meets Swedish suburbia. Suburbia mania. Now we are asked to make Spreitenbach a city. What if it doesn’t want to become a city?

No connections exist between these parallel structures, instead keeping an awkward distance from each other. In a hypothetical future, the mall extends across the valley and transversally connects all the actors together. Not a polite co-existence anymore, but rather cohabitation; intercourse. Like an old couple that don’t sleep with each other anymore, we need to spice up their relationship.
