Bridges House

Located in the heart of Zurich, Parkhaus Hauptbahnhof is an underutilized space with great potential. This project reimagines the existing infrastructure to address Zurich’s growing demand for housing while providing a new home for the organization OFF (Ort Für Frauen), which supports migrant women and their children.  Inspired by La Maison des Babayagas in Montreuil, the project envisions a self-managed, cooperative living space that offers permanent housing for elderly women and temporary housing (ranging from one week to three months) for migrant women and their children. These residential units will be linked to shared spaces, including a communal kitchen, laundry room, and a living room, fostering a sense of community.  Beyond housing, the redevelopment will integrate a neighborhood center that welcomes the broader community. This center will feature essential resources such as language courses, childcare facilities (afterschool care), and diverses activities — primarily for migrant women but accessible to the entire neighborhood. Additionally, a bar/restaurant, a small shop selling products from a community- maintained productive garden, and a small health support service will contribute to the well-being of both residents and neighbors.   A core principle of the project is intergenerational solidarity. Elderly residents will have the opportunity to mentor and support migrant women, fostering meaningful relationships and a mutually enriching environment.  The architectural redesign will prioritize accessibility, sustainability, and community-oriented spaces.  By transforming Parkhaus Hauptbahnhof into a socially driven residence and support center, this initiative will tackle pressing urban challenges such as housing insecurity, social isolation, and integration barriers.
