THE BICYCLE EXPERIENCE (THEMA C)

To build a more sustainable city, we need more bicycles and less cars. Yet connectivity spaces, where people can cycle, walk, and meet are difficult to find, while cars seem to eat all the available spaces. This project turns a side of the Engros Market, an area designed for motored vehicles, into an urban ecosystem accessible to bicycles and pedestrians. It innovates an existing industrial space, preserving its original aim while adding new accessibility and sustainability functions.

The existing ramp used by cars and trucks is preserved, but a series of new elements are created around it, to provide citizens with the “Bicycle Experience”. First, people can fix their bicycles or assemble new ones at the Bike Factory, a workshop located underneath the ramp. Second, pedestrians and bikers can cross a new Urban Pathway, hanging next to the ramp, whose weight is sustained in part by the ramp itself, in part by new pylons. The Urban Pathway connects the main street and the Bike Factory to the Urban Plaza, an elevated and car-free square to meet and socialize. Finally, the Pathway ends at the Bike Park, located on the roof of the southern building, where bikers can cycle around, try their new bicycles or even compete with each other.
